The Great Bloomers, El Mocambo, 1 a.m.

The local youngsters played their earnest and energetic country-tinged pop-rock to the enthusiastic faithful early Friday morning as the NXNE’s unofficial opening night wound down to a close.

The band’s rambling, piano-based sound is part Springsteen, part Coldplay, with dashes of Neil Young and more experimental indie-rock tossed in for good measure.

Nobody else I saw on Thursday night put more heart into their 40-minute set than Great Bloomers’ bright frontman Lowell Sostomi, and judging by the fervent diehards in the first few rows, The Great Bloomers are only going to keep picking up steam.

    Message for Tim:

Good to see you, and hope to again if you’re in the neighbourhood.

    I’ll watch your site closely.

Best of luck to you and the band.

    Diehard… I’ll self-identify with that.
